Americans create 57% of the world's advertising while representing only 6% of its population; half of our waking hours are spent immersed in the mass media. History of the Mass Media in the United States: An Encyclopedia examines the ways in which the mass media affect American society radio advertising research and also the ways in which the mass media are in turn affected by societal developments in the United States. Mass media, for the purposes of this work, are defined as: newspapers, advertising, books radio advertising research and magazines, public relations, motion pictures, radio, television, cable television, radio advertising research and photography or photojournalism. The time period covered by the Encyclopedia is from 1690 (the founding of the first American newspaper) to 1995 - more than 300 years of mass media history. The Encyclopedia is comprised of more than 475 alphabetically arranged entries of from 500 to 5,000 words; some 200 scholars have contributed to the work.
